George Evelyn is living the dream. Chatting with me in his Melbourne Crown Towers hotel room, the Nightmares on Wax main man is brimming with positive enthusiasm and says he has much to be thankful for.
For one thing, he lives on the beautiful and famed Spanish island of Ibiza. Second, Evelyn spreads his music to beaming, grateful audiences around the world and is paid well for it. Thirdly, the music he makes and plays is sun-drenched feel-good music and, these days, Evelyn is – as the title of his last studio album attests – Feelin' Good.
'I think I'm learning to really tap into what it is that I do and recognise the craft,' he says. 'Not that I didn't appreciate it before, but I feel like I'm in a better place – the best place I've ever been – because I'm enjoying my music now more than I ever have at any other time in my life. I'm just happy with what I'm doing and I want to share it with people. It feels like the beginning and that's because I'm not the same person anymore.'
In 1989, Evelyn and Kevin Harper formed Nightmares on Wax as a bleepy, hip-hop-influenced rave act, releasing their debut album, A Word of Science, in 1991. By the time of its 1995 follow-up, Smoker's Delight, much had changed. Evelyn – by then steering the N.O.W ship solo – made his lush, downtempo blueprint and arguably his most definitive album. Evelyn says the original inspiration for Smoker's Delight was actually UK rave pioneers The KLF.
'Back in 1990, about a year into the whole rave and after-party thing, there was an organic social thing happening after clubs that nobody planned,' Evelyn recalls. 'Whether it was going back to somebody's house, to an after-hours, or hanging about in a carpark, there was this thing you never did before. KLF brought out their Chill Out album and I remember listening to that and I said: 'I'm going to make my own hip-hop chill-out album and I'm going to call it Smoker's Delight.'
Since then Evelyn has made a series of consistently heart-warming and soulful Nightmares on Wax albums, the result of his primary influences: hip-hop, dub-reggae, soul, funk, soundsystem culture, soundtracks and house music. He now records with string sections, guitarists, percussionists, arrangers, keyboardists, rappers and singers.
Evelyn's music affects people. It most often makes them happy but he relates how he also has no control over it once it's out there.
'I've had a woman come up to me in Arizona and say: 'Can I give you a hug? Me and my deceased husband used to listen to your music and all of those songs remind me of him and I felt like he was here tonight'. That's why I think if you're going to put something out into the world, if it's travelling like that and it affects people, why not do something good?'
Evelyn, his wife and 13-year-old daughter moved from the UK (Evelyn was raised in Leeds) to Ibiza more than seven years ago, however they live far from the island's hedonism in a quiet countryside farmhouse.
'The beautiful thing about Ibiza is that you can travel 10 minutes and be in absolute chaos, or you could be in absolute peace,' he says. 'I think I went to three clubs last summer and two of them I was DJing at. You get people coming over from the UK, ringing up and saying: 'Yo! I'm here, man! Are you coming out?' And I'm like: 'err, no, I'm not coming out! To me, being at home, or being in the garden or jumping in the pool, that's the shit'.
Nightmares on Wax DJs before Fat Freddy's Drop at the Palais Theatre, St Kilda, and at the official after party at the Espy, St Kilda, on Friday, January 23. Nightmares on Wax is also part of the Sydney Festival, at Festival Village, The Aurora, on January 25 at 11.45pm.
